TOPLAP Strasbourg charter
What we stand for, and how we want to share our events, workshops and spaces together.
Our values
Openness and accessibility
Live coding and digital arts should be accessible to everyone, whatever their level. We never assume you need to "already know how to code" to join us: our workshops are designed so you can come in through music, visuals, or plain curiosity.
Sharing and free culture
In the spirit of the international TOPLAP network, we encourage sharing knowledge, tools and source code. What gets made at our events is meant to circulate: code published, recordings shared, know-how documented rather than kept to ourselves.
Creation and experimentation
We support artistic research and innovation in the digital arts. Errors, bugs and crashes are part of the game — a performance that goes wrong is not a failure, it's a risk taken on purpose.
Community
We bring together an open, caring and collaborative collective. Nobody plays alone: artists, technicians, audience — everyone contributes to what happens in the room.
Ground rules
- Respect. No discriminatory, harassing or disrespectful behaviour is tolerated, towards anyone — artist, volunteer, audience. This applies online (Discord, social media) as much as in the room.
- Consent. Ask before filming, photographing or recording anyone recognisable. Respect a "no" without argument.
- Show your code. "Show us your screens" — in the TOPLAP spirit, we don't hide what we're running. Transparency is a courtesy to the audience as much as an aesthetic principle.
- Take care of equipment and venues. Our events take place in venues that host us (Le Shadok, La Pérestroïka, La Grenze, Karmen Camina, Diamant d'Or...). We leave them the way we found them.
- Pay what you can, DIY spirit. Many of our events are pay-what-you-want. Contribute according to your means, and keep in mind that this way of working relies on the group's solidarity.
- Give credit. Mention the people whose code, visuals or tools you use. It goes hand in hand with the free culture we stand for.
A problem, a conflict?
If something isn't right during an event or in our online spaces, you can talk to any board member or reach us through the contact page. We'd much rather hear about it early than find out about a problem afterwards.
This text evolves with the association — suggestions welcome.
